Africa Water Infrastructure Development (AWID) is a platform to develop water infrastructure in Africa, established by Metito and British International Investment (BII) in 2023. The platform is the first of its kind to develop and finance climate-smart water projects at scale, including wastewater treatment and water supply infrastructures, and increase water security across Africa. AWID aims to improve access to safe and reliable water, treat and recycle wastewater for consumers and businesses, and increase climate resilience through a water-secure Africa.
The platform will work towards integrating climate change considerations, green technologies, and alternative energy components into its investments, which will help to reduce the environmental footprint and increase the resilience of water infrastructure to the evolving climate change. It will also demonstrate a viable commercial model for water infrastructure development and water provision in Africa, helping to mobilize long-term capital and investment into the sector.
